Making Cities and Spaces Work for People

The global coronavirus pandemic has forced communities to restrict access to public places — and forced residents of all ages to, as much as possible, remain at home. For now, staying put is following doctor’s orders. In time, getting out will again be a prescription for good physical and emotional health. Placemaking specialist Matthew Lister explains the need for public spaces that invite public life.

With local governments and community organizations focused on the devastating impact of the global coronavirus pandemic, we know the need for interventions and support is greater than ever. This year's AARP Community Challenge provides an option for project funding related to COVID-19 response efforts.

P.S. Applications for the AARP Purpose Prize, which honors individuals age 50-plus and benefits the nonprofit organization they founded, are due tomorrow, April 30.

The Magic of Empty Streets — Spending time outdoors and in public places is possible during the pandemic when there’s enough space for physical distancing. Some cities are serving up space by closing or reducing traffic lanes so people can safely bicycle and walk. Source: The New York Times ►

Little Free Pantries — With so many people now struggling financially, many homes and businesses with book-sharing boxes have converted their curbside little libraries into locations for giving away food, toiletries and other needed items. Source: LittleFreeLibraries.org ►

Provide Help — In “normal” times, more than 13.2 million older adults don’t have enough money to make ends meet. Such hardships have increased. AARP’s charitable affiliate is raising critically needed funds to help meet the basic needs of low-income seniors. Source: AARP Foundation ►
