Getting Creative to Create Casitas
Accessory dwelling units — commonly referred to as ADUs and known in Tucson, Arizona, as casitas — have been allowed in the city since 2022, when it became legal for owners of a single-family residence to create a smaller, secondary dwelling on their property. A housing design competition in 2023 resulted in preapproved designs that builders and property owners can use.
