Adaptive Reuse
— Every community has its share of unused or underutilized buildings, such as empty warehouses, shuttered schools, vacant grocery or big box stores, and struggling strip malls. Municipalities are looking at such eyesores through an adaptive reuse lens and transforming them into state-of-the-art facilities at a fraction of the cost of building anew.

A Good Use
— To ensure that “legacy” residents are not priced out of their community, an Atlanta nonprofit acquired an abandoned apartment complex and rehabilitated the buildings into modern, affordable apartments. Applicants were prioritized, in part, based on the number of years they’ve lived in the area.
