America Is an Aging Nation
By 2030, 1 in 5 people in the United States — or 20 percent of the nation's population — will be 65 or older. By 2034, people age 65 or over will outnumber children age 17 or younger. These and other population statistics and projections are a reason for the AARP Livable Communities initiative.

America Needs More 'Aging-Ready' Homes
The nation's population is rapidly aging — but the nation's housing stock isn't suitable for what's coming. Only about 10 percent of all homes in the United States are aging-ready.

The Next Four Decades: 2010-2050
From our archives, a U.S. Census report published in May 2010 notes that the coming, rapid aging of the U.S. population will "create ripple-effects throughout the fabric of America" and that community planners and local governments will need to understand and plan for changes in family structures, city infrastructures, communication methods, volunteerism, transportation, health, and ethnic/linguistic needs.
