'
— When the month was so named in 1963, "only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday," reports a history about the commemoration. "About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs." Today, there are nearly 56 million people age 65 or older in the U.S.
