Eligible but Unenrolled: From ACA to Medicaid and Beyond, Good Policy Must Reach People

Millions of eligible individuals aren’t accessing key programs that lower the financial barriers to health insurance. Nearly 11 million uninsured individuals, including 1.4 million older adults, eligible for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Health Insurance Marketplace subsidies did not sign up for coverage in 2020, and the same phenomenon plays out in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. As AARP and other organizations have shown, outreach efforts can close the gap between good policy and the people who need it.

Payroll Deduction Retirement Programs Build Economic Security

Despite workplace retirement savings programs being a proven means for helping to build retirement security, nearly half of private sector employees don’t have access to a payroll deduction program in the workplace. State-facilitated programs aim to close the gap. With a companion video also offering insights, AARP’s updated fact sheets on payroll deduction retirement programs provide a detailed look at the state-program numbers, both nationally and in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

COVID-19 Dashboard: Nursing Home Cases and Deaths Continued to Climb

The latest COVID-19 surge in nursing homes has yet to peak as deaths and cases rose each week during the most recent four-week period. Furthermore, July marked the third consecutive month that deaths and cases rose, according to the latest AARP Nursing Home COVID-19 Dashboard update. Cases among both residents and staff jumped by about 30 percent for the four weeks ended July 17. Meanwhile, vaccination and booster rates are stagnating.

Social Security by the Numbers in Every State

AARP’s newly released fact sheets for all 50 states and the District of Columbia highlight the importance of Social Security as a valuable source of retirement income and poverty alleviation, particularly at a time of high inflation and economic uncertainty. Detailing the extent to which each state’s residents rely on Social Security benefits, the fact sheets also outline Social Security's impact on state economies.

Massachusetts Nurses and School Leaders Take on Vaping

Using funding from the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, nursing and school leaders are seeking to curb vaping among students in Massachusetts. The effort is part of the Campaign’s Massachusetts Action Coalition’s work to increase nurse leadership on school wellness committees, with a particular focus on communities with low health rankings. The Campaign is an initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
