Open Enrollment: An Opportunity for Consumers and Policymakers Alike

At a time when consumers are reviewing their health insurance coverage during the annual Open Enrollment Period (running through Jan. 15 in most states), policymakers can identify ways to strengthen the program — particularly as short-term tax credits and some pandemic-era protections are set to expire. An AARP Public Policy Institute report explores options to improve access to affordable coverage for older adults, including increasing subsidies for reducing cost sharing, closing the Medicaid coverage gap, and limiting the sale of plans that don’t have comprehensive health benefits.

The Effect of a Universal Automatic IRA With Emergency Savings on Household Wealth

About half of the private sector workforce doesn’t have access to a payroll deduction retirement savings program. The automatic IRA workplace savings system coupled with a feature for emergency savings could substantially improve household wealth and overall national savings, according to an AARP Public Policy Institute report. As the report details through data on best- and worst-case scenarios, the difference in savings for those with access to payroll deduction plans and those without them is staggering.

Medicare Savings Program Enrollment Increases When States Expand Criteria

Changes four states made to the enrollment criteria for Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs) meant expanded coverage, and they offered different ways for other states to replicate the effort. Federal law sets the minimum standards for MSP eligibility, but states have leeway to build on those standards, setting higher income and/or asset criteria. As other states consider policy changes to their MSPs, this AARP Public Policy Institute paper provides analysis of the changes made in Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, and Oregon.

‘Everyone Can Play a Role’ in Advancing Health Equity

Nurses have a critical role in ensuring everyone is involved in establishing and accomplishing health equity goals. Following that vision was a main theme of the recently held AARP Health Equity and Nursing Summit: Turning Commitments into Action. Coming together to create health equity action plans for their workplaces, communities, and networks were more than 150 summit participants from nursing, health care delivery, business, unions, social services, social justice, and consumer organizations.
