A Closer Look at Sandwich Generation Caregivers of Medicare Beneficiaries

Today’s sandwich generation caregivers are younger, more diverse, and more likely to have jobs as they balance providing care to older Medicare beneficiaries and young children, a new report from the AARP Public Policy Institute finds. The report provides an analysis of these caregivers and a discussion of the policy solutions needed to support their care responsibilities while protecting their economic futures.

Policy Options to Make Health Insurance More Affordable for Older Adults

Millions of adults ages 50 to 64 do not have health insurance. Even with the Affordable Care Act having led to significant improvements in access to affordable coverage, barriers remain and certain challenges are reemerging. The end of pandemic-era continuous enrollment protections for Medicaid means more older adults will lose health coverage. A series of four briefs from the AARP Public Policy Institute explores the issue and offers policy solutions. Approaches focus on improving affordability of health coverage, expanding access to coverage, and better facilitating outreach and enrollment.

Medical Credit Cards: A Potential Debt Trap for Older Consumers

The use of medical credit cards is on the rise among consumers using them to cover elective procedures, primary care services, and even emergency room visits. This trend threatens the financial security of older adults and other consumers, who are often unaware of programs in place to help meet the out-of-pocket costs of medical care. A recent blog examines the issues surrounding medical credit cards and discusses alternatives available to consumers.

In Nursing Homes, COVID Deaths and Cases Rise Ahead of Expected Winter Surge

COVID-19 deaths at nursing homes rose sharply in the four-week period that ended November 19, 2023, marking the start of an expected surge in cases during the winter. Deaths and cases among residents more than quadrupled compared to the four weeks ended June 25, 2023, according to the data tracked and analyzed every two months by the AARP Nursing Home COVID-19 Dashboard. The dramatic shift in cases was also reflected among staff, with approximately one staff for every 37 residents testing positive during the reporting period.

AARP Policy Now: The 2023 AARP Livability Index Offers Information on Housing

Both a powerful policy mechanism and a useful tool to consumers seeking the right community that meets their needs, the 2023 AARP Livability Index^TM tracks seven categories, 40 metrics, and 21 policies. Categories include housing, neighborhood, transportation, environment, health, engagement, and opportunity. Among myriad other uses, the Index aims to guide conversations on meeting the housing needs of an aging country. Five nurses honored for their program implementation, community engagement, and inspired solutions in health equity share a piece of their stories on video. The AARP Center for Health Equity Through Nursing^SM and the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, an initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, bestowed Equity-Minded Nurse Awards in categories of practice, research, education, leadership, and early career.
