Alan Weil Named AARP Senior Vice President, Takes Helm of AARP Public Policy Institute
Alan Weil has joined AARP as senior vice president, public policy, and director of AARP's Public Policy Institute. Most recently, Weil was editor-in-chief of Health Affairs, the nation’s leading peer-reviewed health policy journal. An elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, he previously served as executive director of the National Academy for State Health Policy and had senior roles at the Urban Institute and the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing.

Before the Diagnosis: Dementia’s Early Financial Toll
When it comes to dementia and the potential for financial loss, vulnerability doesn’t start at the moment of diagnosis. The years prior to a dementia diagnosis often leave a trail of substantial financial losses, according to a growing body of research. AARP and the MIT AgeLab convened a symposium on dementia’s early financial toll and explored the issue in a new report, which discusses the nature of the financial threats, the levers for change, and barriers to action.

Most Part D Enrollees Who Reach New $2,000 Spending Cap Will Save in 2025
More than 1 million Medicare Part D enrollees will save money under the $2,000 out-of-pocket cap that took effect in 2025, an AARP Public Policy Institute analysis finds. On average, 62 percent of enrollees who reach the cap will save more than $1,000, and 12 percent will save more than $5,000.

Prices for Top Medicare Part D Drugs Have Nearly Doubled Since Entering the Market
The 25 Medicare Part D drugs with the highest levels of spending (excluding those selected for Medicare drug price negotiation) have experienced price increases averaging 98 percent since they entered the market, a recent AARP Public Policy Institute report shows. The report’s findings highlight the importance of Inflation Reduction Act provisions allowing the government to negotiate prescription drug prices and assess penalties when drug companies increase prices faster than the rate of inflation.

In Memory of Linda Burnes Bolton, a Pioneer in Nursing Care
Dr. Linda Burnes Bolton, who made historic contributions in the field of nursing, is remembered in a recent blog post of The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action. She was the vice chair of the committee that developed the then-named Institute of Medicine’s 2010 Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health report, which set out a crucial blueprint for transforming nursing care to meet the increasingly complex demands on the health care system. The Campaign,  an initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, was launched to implement the report’s recommendations.
