Despite Anxiety Screening Recommendations for Those Younger, Age 65-Plus Research Lags

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force’s new guidelines recommending screening for anxiety disorders among adults 18 to 64 failed to address adults 65 and older. That lack of guidance concerning undiagnosed anxiety among the 65-plus highlights an urgent need for more research on this age group, and it also points to a broader need to understand the relationship between aging and other mental health conditions.

Officials must pay close attention to achieve a successful rollout of the newly approved RSV vaccine. At a time when older adults may not be particularly enthusiastic coming out of the pandemic about a new vaccine recommendation, improved community-based outreach efforts are crucial. Such efforts should aim to increase confidence and reduce barriers to access. Meanwhile, for consumers to make sound decisions, they’ll need more information on when and how to receive multiple vaccines.

The Scope of Elder Financial Exploitation: What It Costs Victims

Older adults over age 60 lose $28.3 billion annually from elder financial exploitation (EFE), a new AARP report shows, and $20.3 billion of those losses come from exploitation by people the victim knows, such as family members. The EFE analysis, done in collaboration with the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, provides unique insight into a problem that is especially hard to track because cases often go unreported.

Simplifying the eligibility process for Medicaid and Medicare Savings Programs could help enrollees access and keep needed benefits while easing the administrative burden on states. Recently proposed regulatory updates currently under consideration by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services would be particularly valuable as states face record-high Medicaid enrollment. Spurred by the proposed updates, many states are already making improvements on their own.

Campaign for Action Launches Award Program to Recognize Equity-Minded Nurses

The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, an initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is seeking applications for a new award program recognizing nurses leading the way to health equity through practice, education, research, or leadership. One winner in each of five categories will receive $1‚000 and a trip to Washington, D.C.‚ to attend and be recognized at a health equity summit. Individuals can apply themselves or nominate other equity-minded nurses. The deadline is Aug. 18.
