Telehealth among Medicare recipients boomed in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, and its use remains high, improving access to care. But with the public health emergency now over, Medicare telehealth coverage could change significantly when a temporary extension of expanded coverage expires at the end of 2024. The explosion of telehealth use, combined with the looming end to the extension, has led policymakers to weigh its benefits and popularity with such concerns as privacy, equitable access, cost-effectiveness, and fraud.
