With instances of gift card fraud more than doubling since the pandemic, AARP has identified three key strategies to better protect older Americans: consumer education, retail employee training, and point-of-sale enhancements. Based on research involving 30 major retailers, these three intervention areas not only promise to raise awareness of the problem, but also prevent scams from succeeding. Each area requires collaboration among the financial industry, retailers, regulators, law enforcement, consumers, and nonprofit organizations. A new AARP training program provides tools to help frontline employees spot scams and engage all players
in curbing fraud.
