Working in collaboration, the AARP Public Policy Institute and the American Planning Association published a guide to overcoming the political, regulatory, procedural, and financial barriers limiting the local supply and legal occupancy of Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs. The publication zeroes in on housing and zoning reform to enable these small structures and apartments (e.g., “backyard bungalows,” in-law suites, etc.) to be placed on the same lot as a single-family home. The guide tackles common challenges and offers resources and examples for taking action.
