Medicaid and Its Role for Older Adults
More than 17 million adults ages 50 and older rely on Medicaid to provide health care services that would otherwise be unaffordable. The program provides coverage for home care aides, adult day services, certain transportation services, home modifications, assistive technology, case management, and other key supports that help older adults stay in their homes and communities. Meanwhile, Medicaid program dollars have been shown to provide stability in the health care system itself, particularly in lowering rates of rural hospital closures. For Midlife Adults, Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance Is Main Source of Coverage
Nearly two-thirds of midlife adults ages 50 to 64 have employer-sponsored health insurance (ESI), including those enrolled directly through their employer or as a dependent on another person’s plan. Nevertheless, some workers in this age group may not be offered coverage or qualify for it, and still others may choose not to enroll. AARP Nursing Home COVID-19 Dashboard Shows December Rise in Cases
The number of COVID-19 cases among nursing home residents rose each week in December, according to the latest AARP Nursing Home COVID-19 Dashboard. The rate of resident cases increased by more than 50% for the four weeks ending Dec. 29 compared to the previous four weeks ending Nov. 24. The trend was in line with an anticipated winter spike following low levels of vaccination. Just 39% of residents and 7% of staff were up to date on COVID-19 vaccination.

New Funding Opportunity to Strengthen the Nursing Workforce
Proposals are being accepted for grants from the 2025 Nursing Innovations Fund, a continuing collaboration between AARP and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses to strengthen the nursing workforce. This program seeks innovative and replicable solutions to create and sustain healthy work environments and improve recruitment and retention rates of registered nurses. Awards of up to $20,000 each will be provided for selected projects that can be completed in one year. Proposals are due April 4.

Grant Leads to Engaging Materials to Prepare Nurses for Board Service
With more nurses interested in serving on health and community boards, AARP and the Nurses on Boards Coalition aim to further awareness and prepare nurses for this vital role. A project outcome of a 2022 Nursing Innovations Fund award showed a 6% increase in the number of nurses across 13 states wanting to serve on boards. A recent blog from the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, an initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, details the efforts to boost board service among nurses.
