Work Requirements for Medicaid Will Entangle Older Adults in Red Tape
Work requirements for Medicaid could lead to loss of coverage for millions of older adults because of difficulties with the paperwork required of enrollees to demonstrate compliance, a new analysis from the AARP Public Policy Institute shows. While some will be able to demonstrate compliance with relative ease, many others will not — particularly family caregivers and people whose work is unstable or irregular. The analysis also found that a work requirement for Medicaid recipients would not lead to a notable increase in employment.

Proposed Change to Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Warrants Deeper Scrutiny
The federal government’s ability to negotiate drug prices is predicted to save nearly $100 billion over 10 years. Critics of Medicare-negotiated drug prices, meanwhile, are raising concerns regarding two categories of drugs under the policy. Despite the lack of research supporting any such conclusion, they argue that biologic drugs’ longer exemption from being selected for negotiation will discourage the development of non-biologic drugs. Any proposals to modify the negotiation process must be guided by conclusive evidence and appropriately targeted to ensure that drug company profits are not prioritized over much-needed savings for Medicare and its beneficiaries, a new Thinking Policy blog argues.

April Employment Data Digest: 55+ Long-term Unemployment Edges Up
As the overall unemployment rate held at 4.2% in the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics April report, it increased for the 55-and-older age group to 3.1 percent from 2.9 percent in March. In total, 1.2 million adults 55-plus were unemployed. Among adults 55-plus seeking jobs, 32% were long-term unemployed, compared to 24.5% of younger jobseekers ages 16 to 54. The U.S. economy added 177,000 jobs in April, down from 185,000 jobs added in March.
