How Small Business Trends Influence the U.S. Older Workforce

Small businesses with fewer than 500 employees continue to be a major source of employment for older workers. In 2022, 24.2 million workers ages 50 and older were employed by small businesses, compared to about 19 million at larger firms of 500 or more employees. Not only do many older workers seek employment at these smaller firms, but they also start their own small businesses. These workforce trends mean economic conditions impacting small businesses have a big impact on older workers.

Medicaid in Midlife: A Profile of Enrollees Ages 50 to 64

In 2019, more than 11 million midlife adults ages 50 to 64 depended on Medicaid coverage for health care. This group represents 12% of the Medicaid population. While midlife enrollees are racially and ethnically diverse, they are more homogeneous than the total Medicaid population and nearly three-quarters live in urban areas. An AARP Public Policy Institute analysis offers a profile of midlife Medicaid enrollees.

A Win for Uninsured North Carolinians – and the State’s Budget

With widespread public support, North Carolina became the 40th state to extend Medicaid coverage under provisions of the Affordable Care Act, paving the way for approximately 182,000 adults ages 50-64 to get Medicaid coverage. The expansion means state residents who earn up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level – about $19,000 annually for an individual and $38,000 for a family of four – will now qualify for Medicaid. Studies from states that have already expanded Medicaid have shown substantial health and economic benefits for new enrollees.

COVID Dashboard: COVID-19 Deaths and Cases Continue to Fall

The rates of COVID-19 resident deaths and cases declined for the third consecutive month in nursing homes throughout the country, according to the latest report from the AARP Nursing Home COVID-19 Dashboard. Staff cases also declined. Despite the trend, rates varied among states with 18 states experiencing an increase in deaths for the four weeks ended April 23, compared to the previous four weeks ended March 26. Nine states saw cases increase during the same timeframe.

Going Back to School to Advocate for Vulnerable Transgender People

Writing for the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, Sasha A. Rarang, PhD, MSN-Ed, CCM, RN, describes her decision to pursue a certification as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. Rarang, herself a trans person, delves into the need to address the mistrust and inequity experienced by transgender individuals in clinical care, as well as in research and education. “To provide representation for transgender people in nursing practice as a future advanced practice nurse is a way of being a role model,” she writes. The Campaign is an initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
