Court Ruling Threatens Preventive Health Service Access for 12 Million+ Older Adults

A legal challenge to the Affordable Care Act provision granting no-cost preventive health services could affect more than 12 million adults ages 50 to 64, according to an AARP Public Policy Institute report. These services, which help detect diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes at early stages, are especially important for older adults. With an appeal pending and a June 2023 stay in effect, insurers are currently required to continue covering services with no cost sharing.

Including Older Workers in the Transition to New Occupations

Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence are already creating new occupations and have the potential to create thousands of jobs while boosting economies. As the demographic shift toward an older workforce continues alongside the urgency of filling a growing number of new positions, the need to help older workers reskill throughout their careers becomes even more apparent and necessary. Countries without effective, age-inclusive occupational transition assistance strategies and programs will risk seeing many of their most critical new jobs go unfilled—and missing out on economic opportunity.

How Do Americans View Social Security?

Social Security continues to enjoy widespread popularity across socioeconomic and political groups, according to a recent AARP Public Policy Institute report. Using data from the General Social Survey, the report examines sentiment toward the program among various communities and demographics, including age, race and ethnicity, political affiliations, and education. The broad takeaway: Most Americans place a high priority on Social Security and protecting and strengthening the program.

Do SNAP Eligibility and Benefit Determinations Sufficiently Reflect Expenses of Older Households?

Eligibility determinations for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the largest federal nutrition program, do not always reflect real-life expenses for low-income households with adults ages 50 and older. An AARP Public Policy Institute report finds that income is not keeping up with expenses, and that deductions don’t always align with real-life expenditures. Changes to the program’s eligibility rules could better account for the expenses people face, particularly when it comes to costs associated with health care, housing, and transportation.

Helping More Low-Income Americans Pay for Medicare Premiums and Copays

In 2024 some people who receive Supplemental Security Income will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Savings Plans (MSP), the generally under-used, state-run programs that can help them pay for some or all of their Medicare premiums and copays. The rule changes will help streamline the current eligibility system, allowing more people with limited financial resources to gain access to needed health care.

Five Nurses Celebrated for Leadership and Innovation in Advancing Health Equity

The Equity-Minded Nurse Awards honored five nurses for their program implementation, community engagement, and inspired solutions in health equity. Given by the AARP Center for Health Equity Through Nursing™ and the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, an initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the awards honored nurses in practice, research, education, leadership and early career. Each was co-sponsored by a national nursing organization. Winners received $1,000 each and recognition at the AARP Health Equity and Nursing Summit: Turning Commitments into Action, held in Washington, DC.
