New LTSS State Scorecard, New Website: Get Latest Insights on Improving Care Systems

The AARP Public Policy Institute has released its latest LTSS State Scorecard, which details how states need to improve their long-term services and supports (LTSS) systems. Using five different dimensions, or LTSS areas, the Scorecard — released every three years — measures each state’s LTSS system performance. In this latest edition, just five states received top marks, and in fact all states can build on their current systems by addressing specific areas. Bolstering the impact and usefulness of the Scorecard is a new regularly updated website that features tools, resources and a growing library of articles and research about LTSS policy, improvements, and challenges.

LTSS Choices: Integrating Medical Care with Long-Term Services and Supports through the PACE Model

A new AARP Public Policy Institute report examines how the PACE model (program of all-inclusive care for the elderly) provides access to a comprehensive range of long-term services and supports (LTSS) and medical care for eligible adults ages 55+. The report discusses the challenges and opportunities for expanding and enhancing PACE, which combines Medicare and Medicaid coverage to meet the medical, prescription drug, physical therapy, dental, and LTSS needs of those enrolled.

September 2023 Employment Data Digest

As the U.S. economy continued to add jobs in September and the overall unemployment rate held steady, older adults faired similarly, the latest AARP Public Policy Institute Employment Data Digest shows. The 55+ unemployment rate was unchanged at 2.7%, representing a slight decrease for men and a slight increase for women. The labor force participation rate was also unchanged for those ages 55+ at 38.8%, with the (unadjusted) rate for those ages 65+ up to 19.5% from 19.3%.

Don’t Forget to Consider Drug Formularies During Open Enrollment!

Comparing drug formularies during open enrollment for prescription drug coverage is a daunting but necessary annual task. A recent blog details why everyone should take this important step, and the tools available to help. Whether their coverage is through Medicare or a private insurer, older adults should ensure that their existing prescription drugs are covered and be aware of any accompanying restrictions or costs. Differences in plan coverage can equate to big differences in out-of-pocket costs, and even access.

AARP Policy Now Video: Nurses and Health Equity

Infusing health equity through nursing is the focus of a newly released AARP Policy Now video. The video is a part of the Equity-Minded Nurse initiative launched by the AARP Center for Health Equity through Nursing^SM and the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, an initiative of AARP Foundation, AARP, and RWJF. In the video, Piri Ackerman-Barger, PhD, RN, FAAN, explains the concept and the ways nursing, which occurs in numerous community settings, can advance health equity and ultimately foster significant change.
